Antigua is an island in the West Indies. It is the main island of the country called Antigua and Barbuda which became an independent state in 1981. The meaning of Antigua is “ancient”. The capital city is St. John’s. The main income is from tourism.
From 1858 stamps from Great Britain were made available for use in Antigua. In 1860 the first order for stamps from Antigua was placed and these were issued in 1862. From 1890 until 1903 Leeward Island stamps were used in Antigua after which Antigua issued its own stamps. Since 1953 the issuing of stamps from Antigua has been more prolific, however very little other postal stationery was issued by Antigua.
