Bhopal

Bhopal became a princely state after signing a treaty with the British East India Company in 1818.

From 1819 – 1926, it was ruled under British suzerainty – this means that Britain had some control over Bhopal but it was internally self governing, i.e. autonomous.

Despite wanting to remain independent in the mid 20th century, Bhopal state was taken over by India in 1949.
