Bhutan is a small landlocked Buddhist Kingdom situated in the eastern Himalayas between India and China. Thimpu is the capital. It is an independent country and has never been colonised by another nation. The head of state is the King of Bhutan.
The first stamps used were revenue stamps. These are not listed in the catalogues. A proper postal service was established in 1962 when the first postage stamps of Bhutan were issued. The stamp issues are aimed at collectors with some issues being embossed on gold foil while even phonograph records have been used as stamps.
