The Republic of Burundi is a landlocked country in Central Africa. It is bordered by Rwanda in the north, the Democratic Republic of Congo to the west and Tanzania to the south and east. Its capital is Bujumbura. In 1962 the country became independent as a Monarchy after being ruled by both Germany and Belgium at different times. Burundi became an independent Republic in 1966. Civil wars since then have ensured that the country remains one of Africa’s poorest.
In 1962, the first stamps of the Republic of Burundi were those of Ruanda-Urundi overprinted Royaume du Burundi. The Republic issued its own stamps from 1966.
