French Polynesia, a French overseas territory, consists of about 130 islands and atolls in the South Pacific Ocean. Tahiti is the largest and most populated island and the capital, Pape’ete is situated on this island.
Postage stamps were first issued in the colony in 1892. As there was only a name change of the country from French Oceanic Settlements to French Polynesia, without real change in status, the stamp history of this colony overlaps, and most stamps are French with overprints of the names of the islands, specifically Tahiti.
