Present day Namibia is the modern name for German South West Africa and subsequently South West Africa. The country is situated on the west coast of southern Africa with South Africa in the south, Botswana in the west, Angola in the north and the Atlantic Ocean on its west coast. The borders have remained the same. The country was a colony of the German Empire from 1884 until 1915 and since 1891, Windhoek has been the capital. After the 1st World War, the country was administered by the Union of South Africa. It became independent as Namibia in 1990.
German stamps overprinted “Otyimbingue” (Otjimbingwe) were used from 1888. The postal service was expanded to Windhoek (1891) and Swakopmund (1895). The first stamp issue for the colony was in 1897 with overprints reading “Deutsch-/Südwest-Afrika”. In 1898, this was changed to “Deutsch-Südwestafrika” without the hyphen. From 1923, stamps of South Africa overprinted “South West Africa” or “Zuidwest Afrika” were used. From 1990, the Republic of Namibia starting issuing its own stamps.
