The territory of Ifni was a Spanish province situated in Morocco on the Atlantic coast. The area including the main town of Sidi was ceded to Spain in 1860. In 1934 Spain began to take a real interest in the area and introduced flights from its national airline Iberian Airlines. This became an important commercial link between the territory and Spanish cities as well as the Canary Islands. The main industry was fishing. After Spain resumed interest in the area, within three months the main town of Sidi changed from a few tented camps to the construction of 600 houses. Between 1957 and 1958 there was a war with Morocco staking claim to the area. After the Ifni war, most of the territory became part of Morocco and in 1969 Spain ceded all parts of the area to Morocco.

In 1941 Spain began issuing stamps for Ifni, first overprinting Spanish stamps with “TERRITORIO DE IFNI”. New designs were issued from 1943. Ifni stamps are popular with collectors, as there have been no Ifni stamps printed since the territory became part of Morocco. The last stamps inscribed Ifni were issued in 1958.
