The Italian Social Republic, more commonly known as the Republic of Salo was a German puppet state created towards the end of the 2nd World War in the north of Italy. It was based in the town of Salo on the shores of Lake Garda. It received limited recognition and only existed from September 1943 when the Germans occupied Italy until the German troops surrendered in May 1945.
Stamps were issued in the name of the Republic during this period. The stamps can roughly be divided into 3 “periods”:
1 From Dec. 1943 to May 1944, Italian stamps were overprinted G.N.R. (Republican National Guard).
2 From Jan. 1944, Italian stamps were overprinted with the fascist emblem and/or Repubblica Sociale Italiana.
3 The “government” of the republic designed one series which was inscribed Repubblica Sociale Italiana.
