The Republic of Cote d’Ivoire is located on the west coast of Africa. Guinea and Liberia are on the western border, Burkina Faso and Mali in the north, and Ghana in the east. To the south is the Gulf of Guinea and the Atlantic Ocean. Its capital is Yamoussoukro. In 1893 Ivory Coast became a French colony. In 1960 it became a republic which it is today despite a lot of political uncertainty.
The first post office was opened in San Pedro in 1847. The first stamps of the colony were made available in 1892. When the Republic came into being, the first stamps depicted elephants and later the country’s first President Felix Houphouet-Boigny.
