Jamaica is the 4th largest island country in the Caribbean. Its capital is Kingston. Historically it fell under Spanish rule until 1655, but thereafter came under British rule. The island achieved independence from Great Britain in 1962.
Jamaica was the first British Colony to establish a post office in 1671. Jamaica’s mail service dates back to the 18th Century. The mail was carried via post horse until 1705. Then a statute established a legal postal service which lapsed and was again established in 1720. By the 1780’s there were more than 2 dozen post offices across the island.
British stamps were used from 1858. In the early 20th century, Jamaica did not do as the other colonies in placing images of the British Kings on their stamps. In 1903, instead of Edward VII, the stamps had the coat of arms of the colony. Subsequently pictures of King George V, VI and Elizabeth II appeared. After independence, earlier stamps (e.g. 1956 stamps) were overprinted “INDEPENDENCE” and “1962”. Since independence the Queen has very seldom been included in stamp designs for the country.
