Kazahkstan was originally part of the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics. It was the last Soviet Republic to become independent in December 1991. 

The country is situated in central Asia, with a small part in eastern Europe. It is the 9^th largest country in the world with a land area of 2,7m sq. km and is the largest landlocked country in the world. With a population of only about 20 million, it has one of the lowest population densities in the world at about 6 people per sq. km. It has borders with Russia to the north and west, China to the east, Kyrgyztan to the south-east, Uzbekistan to the south and Turkmenistan to the south-west. It has a coastline along the Caspian Sea, the world’s largest inland body of water. The capital is Astana.

The country has the highest human development ranking in the region, due in part to its oil and gas industry and vast mineral resources. However agriculture remains the source of livelihood for a great part of the population.

The first stamp of Kazahkstan (depicting a warrior’s suit found at the Issyk mound in 1969) was issued in 1992.  From the early period of independence, Soviet stamps were overprinted, but the first definitive set of stamps was issued in January 1993.
