Malayan Federation

The Federation of Malaya existed from 1948-1963.  It consisted of 11 states (nine Malay states and two British Straits Settlements, Penang and Malacca).  The Federation became independent in 1957 and in 1963 Malaysia was formed which included Singapore, North Borneo and Sarawak.  Today it is known as the Malaysian Peninsula.  The capital was and is Kuala Lumpur.

From 1949, each State issued a set of stamps with the same design and values, with the word “Malaya” on top.  Each Sultan appeared on his own stamps, but all stamps were valid for use across Malaya.
