St Vincent and the Grenadines is an island country situated in the Caribbean. Its capital is Kingstown. It is situated just south of St Lucia. The country consists of the main island of Saint Vincent and the northern 2/3 of the Grenadines which are several smaller islands to the south. Most of the country lies within the hurricane belt. For the two centuries before independence in 1979, government of the island passed between Great Britain and France on a regular basis. It was the last of the Windward Islands to gain independence. Attempts have been made to become a republic, and replace Queen Elizabeth II as head of state, however, the proposal was defeated once again in 2009.
The first stamps of St Vincent were issued in 1861. Most featured a portrait of the reigning monarch and local island scenes. Since 1983 there has been a move away from the pictures of monarchs and many sports personalities and film stars are featured. Until 1992, the stamps were printed “St Vincent” after that “St Vincent and the Grenadines”.
