Sharjah, the capital of the emirate of Sharjah is the 3rd largest city in the United Arab Emirates. Situated on the Persian Gulf it is part of an enormous urban area which includes Dubai and Ajman as well.
Mail went through Dubai, but since 1963, stamps and postal stationery were issued in the name of Sharjah and Dependencies. After joining the United Arab Emirates in 1971, Sharjah continued to issue its own stamps until 1973 when stamps of the UAE superseded those of Sharjah.
