The Islands of Saint Pierre et Miquelon are situated just south of the Canadian provinces of Newfoundland and Labrador. They are referred to as a self governing overseas collectivity of France. The capital is St. Pierre.
Saint Pierre is French for St. Peter who is the patron saint of fishermen.
In 1885, the islands began overprinting stamps of the French colonies with SPM and ST PIERRE M-on. From 1909, the islands issued their own stamps. In 1976, they became an official overseas territory of France and used French stamps until 1986, when the islands began issuing their own stamps.
