From 1862 – 1973 British Honduras was a Colony of the United Kingdom. It gained full independence in 1961 and was renamed Belize in 1973. It is situated on the east coast of Central America, east of Guatemala and Mexico. Before 1971 its capital was Belize City and after 1971, it was Belmopan.
In 1866, the Colony introduced its own stamps. In 1888, the currency changed from pounds to cents and dollars which meant that the stamp stock had to have surcharges. Their first commemorative stamp was issued in 1921. British Honduras issued its last stamps in 1973 celebrating the festivals of Belize.
